Sediment Sampling Campaign Under the Lisbon Stories Project

On 7th January 2020, a team constituted by several members of the Instituto Dom Luiz (IDL) carried out a sampling of sediments in a work on the 24 de Julho Aveny, in Lisbon. These works were carried out within the Lisbon Stories project, which aims to characterize the evolution of the north margin of the Tagus estuary, through analysis of several environmental indicators determined in sediments collected on the ancient margin. Sampling has been done in places that are currently accessible due to the constant remodeling of the Lisbon riverfront, which due to the construction of underground structures (e.g. cellars, car parks) needs to remove the thick deposits of landfills deposited on the margin over time. Since 2011 samples have been collected in 22 works carried out on the Lisbon riverfront, and archaeological finds from different chronologies have been identified. The project also aims to understand, through reading the anthropic materials found in the sediments or the anthropic structures that rest on the deposits, the relationship between the population of Lisbon and the river in different chronological periods.The project is coordinated by Ana Maria Costa (Instituto Dom Luiz - IDL, LARC | DGPC; EnvArch - Environmental Archeology | CIBIO InBIO) and by Maria da Conceição Freitas (Instituto Dom Luiz - IDL | Departamento Geologia FCUL| Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa) and has the collaboration of DGPC archaeologists, archaeologists and archeology companies responsible for monitoring the work on the Lisbon riverfront, students and technicians from the Departamento de Geologia of FCUL. Funding is obtained through IDL, FCUL's Associate Laboratory.
