Scientific Highlights 

Earthquake hazards. The seismicity of low-strain regions (e.g., Iberia, Azores, Ghana, Norway) was studied with a new level of detail allowed by dense seismic and geodetic datasets, often taking advantage of ML tools. The new catalogs image the fine structure of seismically active regions, highlighting their complexity and identifying previously unmapped active faults. Earthquakes in the Azores and Norway were shown to respond to hydrological loads, demonstrating how external loads affect the time evolution of near-critical systems. IDL contributed to key developments towards open seismic data, products and services at national and European levels. 

Volcanism. New results shed light on how volcanic activity contributed to environmental changes and mass extinctions in the geological past. Joint analyses of different geophysical datasets revealed that magma movement follows frequencies imposed by lunisolar forces acting on the crust and Earth's surface, from the time scale of eruptions (days-weeks) to longer century time scales. These advances offer critical insights into the temporal evolution of eruptions and advances our capability of forecasting future volcanic eruptions and their evolution, with hazard implications.

Mantle dynamics. Research in Macaronesia (Cape Verde, Canary, Madeira, and the Azores Islands) focused on the intricate coupled dynamics of the crust and mantle, showing a diversity of mantle upwellings at different stages of evolution. Notably, our results indicate that the mantle plume beneath Madeira is possibly in a dying stage. Differently, we found evidence of a rejuvenated lithosphere beneath Cape Verde. Studies in Madeira and Canaries unveiled a complex anisotropic pattern beneath both hotspots, offering insights into the origin of intraplate magmatism. 

Mineral resources. We developed holistic methods for exploring new critical mineral resources in various geological settings, from Oman to Iberia. By combining classic and cutting-edge field approaches and advanced laboratory techniques, we successfully defined geochemical, isotopic, and geochronological fingerprints to find unknown ore deposits. Studies on hydrocarbon reservoirs in the Jurassic carbonate platforms in the Lusitanian basin (Portugal) underscored the importance of carbonate porosity in the distribution of these reservoirs, which is crucial for the correct assessment of these carbonate-based reservoirs.

Mountain building and orogenic collapse. Geochemical and geochronological studies revealed the relationship between mountain building and collapse events, with a special focus on the Upper Palaeozoic Variscan Belt in the Iberian Massif. The study of the palaeogeography of marine basins formed by collisional orogens in the Iberian Massif showed its importance in constraining crust dynamics relative to far-field mechanisms such as slab rollback or orogenic delamination, forcing crustal thinning and orogenic collapse.

Research Outlook 

RG3 focuses on Solid Earth Dynamics, with emphasis on ocean islands, continents, and extending into continental margin processes, collaborating tightly with other RGs. In 2025-29 the group will investigate mantle, crustal and surface processes, with the goal of tackling the following critical challenges:

1) Earthquakes and volcanism, from fundamental research on seismogenesis and volcanogenesis to the development of innovative monitoring techniques and improved hazard assessment, using state-of-the-art datasets (e.g., dense seismic deployments, emerging new data types, satellite data) and methodologies, including novel ML-based approaches;

2) Mantle dynamics and tectonic modelling, from advanced seismic imaging of the heterogeneity and anisotropy of the crust and mantle, to cutting-edge tectonic modelling that allows to establish the key drivers of plate tectonics and model the current state of stress of the Earth;

3) Geodynamic evolution, integrating multiple time-space dimensions and high-quality datasets on mineralogy, geochemistry (multi-elemental and isotopic multi-system), petrology (including geothermobarometry) and geo(thermo)chronology, to grant comprehensive multi-variable synthesis of the main processes governing different geodynamic systems in key areas;

4) Mineral and hydrocarbon resources, from their formation to responsible exploration/exploitation, using cross-fertilised geological-geochemical-geophysical outputs that will improve genetic models, expanding also the criteria for delimitation of concealed anomalies (namely in critical components for energy transition);

5) Understanding past environments, climates, and their paleogeographic evolution based on the geological record, including combined sedimentary, stratigraphic, petrological/geochemical and tectonic assessments.
