Monitoring of ultrafine particles in the surrounding urban area of civilian airport

A unique study in Portugal recently published by the Atmospheric Pollution Research journal evaluated the concentration of ultrafine particles in the vicinity of Lisbon Airport. High levels of these particles have detrimental effects on public health due to their direct absorption by the body through the respiratory system. This work, in which participated the researcher of the Instituto Dom Luiz, Ana Russo in collaboration with researchers from Faculdade de CiΓͺncias e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Centro de Investigação em Ambiente e Sustentabilidade and IPMA, found concentrations of these particles that are 18 to 26 times higher in areas influenced by the movements in the Lisbon Airport. This work points to a direct relationship between air movements and high levels of ultrafine particles, not only near the airport but also in other areas of the city overflown by airplanes.
