MIT– SES PhD students receive “Best environmental impact hack Award" in the Lisbon Green Hackaton

Joana Baptista, Raquel Figueiredo and Sara Freitas (IDL and MIT Portugal Sustainable Energy Systems PhD Students) won the prize for “Best environmental impact hack” in the Lisbon Green Hackaton, which took place on the 12th and 13th of March. Duarte Santos was the fourth member of the winning team. The winning project "PV beaches" consisted in the construction of a sun umbrella capable of storing solar energy, through a series of photovoltaic cells on its surface and a batery. This project allows people to enjoy the good weather, while charging their mobile devices and decreasing their ecological footprint.The PhD students want to continue working on this project in the future and the sun umbrella already has a name: "CumuluSolar".Congratulations!

More information on the project and prize (PT):O nosso projeto consistiu, literalmente, na elaboração de um guarda-sol - guarda-sol porque tem a capacidade de armazenar a energia solar. Como? Através de um sistema constituído por células fotovoltaicas espalhadas pela sua superfície que produzem electricidade e uma bateria que a armazena. Para quê? Para que os veraneantes possam carregar os seus dispositivos electrónicos (telemóveis, tablets, câmeras, etc.) enquanto desfrutam do seu dia nas esplanadas, livres de preocupações e sabendo que estão a contribuir para a diminuição da sua pegada ecológica. E mais alguma coisa? Sim! O nosso guarda-sol (que batizamos de CumuluSolar), além de proteger os seus utilizadores do Sol, permite ainda, através de um conjunto de sensores ligados a um microcontrolador, monitorizar e fornecer, em tempo real, informação relativa ao consumo dos equipamentos, à temperatura ambiente, à humidade relativa e ao índice UV. Como aceder então a estes dados? Fácil!
