ECORD Distinguished Lecture at IDL

The International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) “Exploring the Earth under the sea” has been one of the main vehicles for the scientific research of the ocean floor, with almost 400 campaigns already been carried out to study the dynamics of the Earth, its structures and processes. The European Council for Ocean Research Drilling (ECORD), of which Portugal is part, is a European-Canada consortium of the IODP program. Since 2007, the ECORD has sponsored a series of international lectures given by leading IODP scientists to disseminate the latest scientific findings to geoscience communities. Portugal has won one of these lectures, which took place last September 25, 2019, at the Instituto Dom Luiz (IDL).

“Unlocking the secrets of slow slip using next-generation seismic experiments and IODP drilling at the north Hikurangi subduction zone, New Zealand" is the title of the lecture by Rebecca Bell, a specialist in Tectonics and Professor at the Imperial College London, UK. Rebecca Bell, whose area of expertise is the study of seismic faults and the evolution of the Earth's crust, addressed a new type of earthquake, the so-called slow earthquake, based on new data recently collected off New Zealand during two IODP expeditions.
