Scientific Interests

Main Interests:

My main interest are related with the sedimentological study of marine sediments. I studied, in the context of research projects (as Principal Investigator), the reconstruction of paleoenvironmental changes based on sediment cores at northern continental shelf and on northern portuguese estuaries in relation with climatic and sea-level changes; in the last years, my work has also focused on fish scales found in the Algarve continental shelf sediments in order to reconstruct fish populations variations in the last thousands years.

I also participated in some studies related with: dredge impacts on benthic community offshore Algarve continental shelf and the associated role of oceanographic parameters; environmental impacts of artificial reef and on coastal areas as Óbidos lagoon, Ria Formosa and Sado and Tagus estuaries. I also actively participated in the impact study of aquaculture offshore area at Armona (southern Portugal), contributing with the hydrodynamic data acquisition (ADCP) and sedimentological study.

At present-day, I divide my work in some areas,  within the context of some projects as:

– The identification and sedimentological characterization of submarine mounts landslides;

– The research of tsunami and paleo-tsunami backwash deposits preserved in shallow marine areas, such as the continental shelf and deeper areas (in a context of a FP7 project). The investigation of such record is crucial to better understand this depositional process and deposits, in order to give information for accurate prediction of future tsunamis and improvement of risk assessment;

– The shoreface morphodynamics as a fundamental study for a better coastal management, based on the knowledge of physical, geological and biological processes;

-The characterization of the impact of the sand extraction and evaluation of the sedimentary recover of some borrow areas in Vilamoura and Albufeira, related with. This study included in a project funded by MAR2020.
