Wave-influenced deposition of carbonate-rich sediment on the insular shelf of Santa Maria Island, Azores

In the scope of the PLATMAR project (PTDC/GEO-GEO/0051/2014), funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology and whose Principal Investigator was Rui Quartau (researcher at Instituto Hidrográfico and Instituto Dom Luiz), the sediments of the Santa Maria island shelf were characterised in terms of their nature and grain size, which provided a unique opportunity to test how sediment was transported on the Santa Maria island shelf. This work entitled "Wave-influenced deposition of carbonate-rich sediment on the insular shelf of Santa Maria Island, Azores" was published in 2022 in the journal Sedimentology and was recently considered one of the most cited papers in 2022-2023 by the journal. It resulted from the work of an international multidisciplinary team, including the Instituto Hidrográfico, Instituto Dom Luiz, the University of the Azores, the University of Manchester (UK), the Dunarea University of Jos de Galati (Romania) and the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology. The first author of this work (Zhongwei Zhao) was a PhD student of Rui Quartau.
