Sierd Cloetingh ends his term as President of Academia Europaea
Professor Sierd Cloetingh is perhaps best know to the IDL community as member of the advisory board of evaluation. He has been president of Academia Europaea for the past 7 years and is now stepping down.Academia Europaea is an organization that aims at the advancement and propagation of excellence in all research areas, promoting public benefit and the advancement of the education of the public of all ages. Under Professor Cloetinghβs leadership, a major breakthrough has been AEβs involvement in the Scientific Advice Mechanism to the European Commission, working closely together with the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors to the Commission. Academia Europaea is a member of the SAPEA consortium (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies). During his presidency, Professor Cloetingh also established four more Academia Europaea hubs in Cardiff, Tbilisi, Budapest and Munich.Professor Cloetingh has made invaluable contributions to science, not only through his pioneering scientific research in Earth Sciences, but also through his role in shaping Europeβs science funding landscape and science policy. He was a member of the Scientific Council of the European Research Council from 2009-2015 and Vice-President from 2014-2015. He served as President of the Association for European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) from 2017-2019.Professor Cloetingh is a Distinguished Professor at Utrecht University and a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Royal Norwegian Academy of Sciences, the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences, the Heidelberg Academy, the Bavarian Academy and the German Academy for Technical Sciences. He is also an honorary member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
