IDL Member Joins the EGU Outreach Committee

Nuno Pimentel, a member of IDL and professor in the Department of Geology at the University of Lisbon's Faculty of Sciences (FCUL), was appointed in October 2024 to join the European Geological Union's (EGU) Outreach Committee.

The EGU is the largest association of geoscientists in Europe, with around 20,000 members. It aims to promote scientific research, alongside applied research, focused on societal and environmental challenges (https://www.egu.eu/about/).

The Outreach Committee operates in the field of Geosciences Dissemination and Communication, with the following key objectives (https://www.egu.eu/outreach/):

  • Increase public awareness of the scientific work of the EGU membership and facilitate dissemination of information beyond the geosciences community.

  • Identify and highlight societal challenges that can be addressed by the EGU membership and harness the expertise of members to address societal needs.

  • Establish and strengthen links between the EGU membership and policy- and decision-makers, primarily but not exclusively in Europe.

  • Facilitate interactions and transfer of information within the geoscience community via newsletters, websites, data portals, bulletins, blogs, and social media.

All IDL members interested in this topic are encouraged to visit the EGU website and participate in Outreach activities. They can contact Prof. Nuno Pimentel (pimentel@fc.ul.pt) for more information.
