IDL at the 15th Congress of the European Federation of Ecology

The Instituto Dom Luiz (IDL) participated in the 15th Congress of the European Federation of Ecology / 18th National Meeting of the Sociedade Portuguesa de Ecologia (SPECO) that took place at the Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (FCUL) between 29 July and 2 August 2019. The overarching theme of this conference, Embedding Ecology in Sustainable Development Goals, intended to promote discussions and interactions on how to integrate basic and applied ecological research, and their trans-disciplinarily impacts, for the effective implementation of the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. This event also aimed to reinforce and clarify the role of two groups: (i) political entities acting as promoters of strategies based on societal and environmental values and (ii) researchers, who generate knowledge and solutions to achieve the objectives of the program.

One of the plenary sessions was in charge of Ricardo Trigo, researcher of the IDL. In this session entitled “Climatic extremes in Mediterranean climate regions”, Ricardo Trigo presented the evolution of climate indicators over the last years in Mediterranean climate regions and discussed the impact of the recorded changes namely regarding the occurrence of extreme events, including drought, hot flashes, and cyclones. The increase in the frequency and intensity of these events over the last decades may also have an influence on the characteristics of large forest fires, such as those that occurred in Portugal in 2017. According to Ricardo Trigo, there is a growing tendency for complex weather events to occur in all Mediterranean regions during this century.
