Scientific Interests

Main Interests:

My research bridges the fields of igneous petrology and metallogeny. I specialise in magmatic ore-forming processes (Fe-Ti-V oxides, Ni-Cu sulfides), petrogenesis of mafic/ultramafic igneous layered intrusions and magma emplacement and diversification at the lower crust. Currently, I am also researching on how metals and sulfur cycle in the oceanic crust during hydrothermal alteration to understand the factors that control the metal signature of Volcanogenic Massive Sulfide deposits. I am also focused on understanding the processes of magma differentiation during the accretion of the oceanic crust using ophiolites as proxies for fast spreading ridges.

My work is based on field or drill-core sampling and logging. I employ detailed mineralogical multi-scale and multi-method characterization, whole rock and in-situ geochemistry plus radiogenic (Nd-Sr-Pb-Os) and multiple sulphur isotope geochemistry to characterise petrogenetic and ore-forming processes. I have a wide experience in establishing inter-sectorial partnerships with government agencies and the mining industry for whom I have also worked as a consultant researcher.

I am an experienced lecturer having prepared and delivered courses in the areas of Mineralogy, Igneous Petrology, Mineral Resources and Mineral Exploration. I worked as an Invited Professor at Faculdade Ciências, Universidade Lisboa (Portugal) and as Assistant Professor at GUtech (German University of Technology in Oman), where I further assumed departmental management and student advising roles.
